How to Fold a Business Letter for Standard Envelopes

The tri-fold (letter fold) is the global gold standard for executive correspondence, invoices, legal notices, and formal business letters. It divides US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4 (210 × 297 mm) paper into three equal panels that fit cleanly inside standard mailing envelopes.

When to Use the Standard Tri-Fold

Use this fold for formal executive correspondence, multi-page business letters, customer invoices, legal notices, and job application cover letters sent inside #10 business or DL envelopes.

Compatible Envelope Sizes

USPS #10 Business (4.125 × 9.5 in) • ISO DL (110 × 220 mm) • Commercial Monarch (3.875 × 7.5 in)

Step-by-Step Folding Instructions
  1. Position Letter: Place sheet face up in portrait orientation on a flat, clean surface.
  2. Fold Bottom Panel Up: Bring bottom edge up to cover approximately 1/3 (33%) of page height and smooth the fold.
  3. Fold Top Panel Down: Fold top section down over the bottom panel leaving a 1-2mm edge clearance.
  4. Crease & Insert: Press crease lines firmly and slide top-fold first into your mailing envelope.

Professional Letter Folding Tips
  • Keep text facing inward so confidential recipient details are protected.
  • Use a bone folder or thumbnail to press crisp, sharp creases.
  • Ensure side edges remain perfectly flush before locking the horizontal fold.
Common Folding Mistakes to Avoid
  • Placing paper in landscape orientation which causes crooked diagonal folds.
  • Inserting open paper edges first into envelope which causes page tearing.
  • Overlapping the top fold past the bottom crease making the letter too thick.

Envelope & Paper Size Compatibility Matrix

Frequently Asked Questions About Folding Letters

Answers to common stationery, business mailing, and postal envelope folding questions.

The standard method is the 3-panel tri-fold: fold the bottom third of the sheet upward, then fold the top third downward over it. This reduces an 8.5 × 11 inch sheet to 3.66 × 8.5 inches for a perfect fit inside #10 envelopes.
